The Olympic Games originally included archery in 1900 for men and 1904 for women (making it one of the oldest sports for female participants), again in 1908 and 1920, and then again in 1972.

There are several variations of competitive archery, in which archers fire arrows at a target, but the goal is always the same: reaching as near the target’s center as possible. Shooting at a target at a distance of 70 meters, the Olympic competition includes a ranking round in which participants’ cumulative scores establish their positions before moving on to a single-elimination bracket.
